About Dr. Leonard Stern

Dr. Stern completed his education at New York Medical College, where he was elected to the AOA honor society in his Junior year and graduated as Valedictorian. He then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NYC, followed by fellowship training in Nephrology at the Montefiore division of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and at Yale New Haven Hospital, Yale School of Medicine, in New Haven, CT.



Dr. Leonard Stern is a nationally and internationally recognized nephrologist practicing in Manhattan, New York City, and West Palm Beach, Florida. He specializes in the comprehensive management of chronic kidney disease, diabetes, gout, hypertension, and metabolic disorders, including thyroid disease, obesity, kidney stone prevention, and metabolic bone disorders such as hyperparathyroidism and osteoporosis. Dr. Stern also has extensive expertise in managing end-stage renal disease (ESRD), including both in-center and home hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, as well as kidney and pancreas transplantation.
He served in the academic and clinical faculty of Columbia University, Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons for over 40 years and is the recipient of an endowed professorship named in his honor, recognizing his outstanding contributions in establishing a dialysis program, patient care, teaching, and clinical research. He has also been a longstanding advocate for patient choice in the management of chronic kidney disease and treatment modality selection.
His teaching portfolio includes training medical students, residents, and fellows in NYC and nationally, work in the middle east, western Europe and in Western China (Chengdu). In Chengdu, he trained a group of nephrologists over a period of 2 years via Skype, to establish the first of its kind home dialysis program in a public hospital. The success of this program over the next 10 years led to training hundreds of nephrologists who then established multiple programs throughout the Sichuan province of China. In recognition of this work, which saved the lives of thousands of indigent patients with kidney failure, the Chinese government awarded him a humanitarian friendship award, a distinguished honor rarely given to a Westerner.
His research focused on Vitamin D metabolism, FGF23 and the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in renal failure. His notable honors include an honorary professorship at Jiangsha Medical University in Chengdu, an Honorary directorship of Dialysis at the third peoples hospital in Chengdu, recognition as a Top Doctor in Nephrology by Castle Connolly for over 20 years, and election as a fellow by the International Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, and the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Stern currently practices concierge medicine, focusing on Internal Medicine and Nephrology, which allows him to provide personalized care for patients with a wide range of medical needs. His professional team includes a registered nurse, a nurse practitioner, and a physician’s assistant.
